Ian Davenport at The Swatch Pavilion - The Venice Biennale.

Ian Davenport Giardini Colourfall, 2017, acrylic on aluminium panels, 3.8 x 14 m. At The Swatch Pavilion - The Venice Biennale 2017

Giardini Colourfall is one of the largest site-specific installations ever made by the British artist and his inspiration came from the chromatic palette of the historical masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, Claude Monet and Pietro Perugino. Extending over a 3.8 x 14 m aluminum panel, this large-scale work consists in 1'000 colours poured down from the top, which pool together and merge at the base.

Galerie Andres Thalmann is delighted about this exciting artistic collaboration between Ian Davenport, SWATCH and our gallery which has now led us to work on the amazing "monumental" project for the Venice Art Biennale.

It all started in 2016 with an extraordinary, large-scale public pop-up art commissioning by Jelmoli, Switzerland's largest premium department store, in the context of façade renovations.

The Jelmoli House brought a big splash of colour to Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse with world-renowned artist Ian Davenport who immediately made an outstanding impression on the Swiss public and on the SWATCH brand.

2017 is also the year for Ian Davenport's first work on the world's smallest canvas ever. For the Swatch Art Collection, he designed the watch WIDE ACRES OF TIME in a limited and numbered edition of 1'966 pieces. The vibrant design incorporates Davenport's colourful stripes on the straps and case, which come together in a chromatic vortex at the heart of the watch dial.

Swiss watchmaker Swatch has collaborated with leading artists such as Keith Haring, Sam Francis, Joana Vasconcelos and now Ian Davenport to create artist-designed limited edition watches.

Starting from June 12th, the watch will be available in selected Swatch stores worldwide.
