A single form, endlessly repeated — yet never the same. Each variation becomes a meditation on surface, memory, and material.
In this new series, Claude Viallat continues his lifelong exploration of form, surface, and repetition. Using his characteristic abstract motif — applied rhythmically across the surface — Viallat engages with a wide variety of unconventional materials, from coffee bean sacks and parasols to discarded household fabrics such as curtains and aprons. These found textiles, marked by their own histories and textures, become integral to the composition, challenging traditional notions of painting and support.
Rather than working on stretched canvas, Viallat embraces the irregularity and tactility of these materials, allowing the work to unfold outside the constraints of the frame. His repeated use of the same motif is never mechanical; instead, it becomes a means of variation, creating a dialogue between uniformity and difference, structure and spontaneity.
Claude Viallat – Recent Works invites viewers into a vibrant and tactile world where color, rhythm, and materiality intersect — an ongoing meditation on the possibilities of painting beyond its conventional boundaries.
