Light is everything.
“Light is everything” explains Sue Arrowsmith, it plays a decisive role in every phase of her painting process, “from the photographs I take in the park, looking up through the trees, to the image projected – the light prism throwing the image onto my studio wall and the reflection and absorption of light onto my metallic surfaces.” Starting with photography, Arrowsmith captures the silhouettes of the treetops against the sunlight with her camera before abstracting the motif and follows the forms with slick, delicate touches of acrylic. Light is also the decisive component in the work itself. Arrowsmith uses a luxurious variety of metallic materials in her work, adorning her paintings with silver, gold, platinum and copper leaf. These materials reflect the light, letting it dance in the work. In this way, her works create movement and interact with their surroundings.
