The artist Donald Sultan, born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1951, has made an international name for himself thanks to his unique approach to form and materials. His artistic breakthrough began in the 1970s and since then he has produced a very influential oeuvre – one that both transcends and expands the boundaries of traditional art.
Sultan‘s works are characterized by a combination of abstract, minimalist shapes and precise lines, creating a harmonious balance between figuration and abstraction. Vivid colours are just as much a part of his artistic signature as the use of unusual industrial materials such as tar, spackle, wooden floor panels, linoleum, and even coal. Sultan uses these materials to create visual tension in his often organic subjects.
The new exhibition Recent Work – Mimosas showcases a selection of works by Donald Sultan dedicated to the subject of mimosas. This floral motif can be interpreted as the artist‘s homage to France, where Sultan‘s love for mimosas originated. On display are artworks dating from 2009 right up to current pieces from 2023, providing you with the opportunity to marvel at the evolution of Sultan‘s visual and formal language.
Works by Donald Sultan can be found in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. His artwork can also be found in many private collections, including the collections of Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, and Giorgio Armani amongst others. At the age of just 37 years, Donald Sultan became the youngest-ever artist to be honoured with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York – a record which still stands today.
